IF THERE was ever a reason needed to visit California this would have to be it. From September 25-27, iconic Huntington Beach will host the annual Surf City Surf Dog event. More than 65 dogs of all shapes and breeds will compete in the contest, donning miniature life vests to “hang 20”. To keep thing fair, the dogs are separated by weight class and include all sorts of breeds from pugs to labradors. Now in its seventh year, the weekend event also includes a doggie fashion show, a yappie hour and dog yoga. Not surprisingly, Huntington Beach is considered “dog heaven” for holiday-makers because of its canine friendly hotels, resorts and restaurants. Declared “DogTown USA” by Dog Fancy Magazine, the destination has 16km of wide open beaches, most of which are accessible to dogs on a leash.
